Uganda’s Ssese Islands listed the top 10 world’s best secret Islands:
Situated 60km from Kampala (Uganda’s capital city), northwest of the Lake Victoria (world’s third largest water body & Africa’s largest lake), the Ssese Islands form one of Uganda’s prime destinations for holidays and a perfect getaway from the towns & city hassles.
According to the BBC Travel, (the live UK traffic and travel website) compiled by the BBC Travel unit with Lonely Planet (the first-hand, up-to-date maps and best information providers for travelers), the Ssese Islands of Uganda are listed number 10 of the world’s best secret islands.
The 84 beautiful Islands which make up the Kalangala district are widely scattered from each other into the Lake Victoria, with Buggala Island the largest, covering an area of 296Km2. Other popular Islands include; Bukasa, Banda, Buyovu, Bufumira, Bubeke, Kkome, Degaya and many others.
These Islands are part of the new paradise in Uganda which must be explored by every traveler & holiday makers in the world. The Islands feature golden beaches, exotic flora & fauna, whispering palm trees and numerous activities for everyone to partake.
Main activities for guest to partake on the Ssese Islands include; sunbath, fishing, bird watching, swimming, canoeing across the lake, guided & unguided walk, campfire & camping, visit to the Bassese (local people of the Ssese Islands).
Several beach camps & resorts have been set up to cater for travelers, mainly on Buggala, Bukasa & Banda islands.
Boats run daily from Kasenyi, Nakiwogo (all in Entebbe) and Bukakata (in Masaka district) the mainland to the Lutoboka port on Buggala Island. The MV Kalangala ferry also runs from Nakiwogo Port, in Entebbe to the Lutoboka port, on Bugala Isaland. The ferry leaves Entebbe at 14:00 & departs from Kalangala at 08:00 daily.
