The National Fisheries Resources Research Institute (NaFIRRI) will showcase 50 different fish species during the Jinja Fish Festival at the Forever Resort in Jinja on December 2, 2018.
According to the NaFIRRI Development Communications Officer, Emily Arayo, the institute will also demonstrate fish farming technologies, including cage culture, and display literature on research findings on fisheries.
The festival is aimed at promoting fishing and culinary tourism.
Reports indicate that Uganda has over 90 fish species including the commercially popular Nile perch, Tilapia, Silver fish, Catfish and Lung fish. This, however, excludes the Haplochromis complex which comprises over 200 species.
Activities at the festival will include presentations on fisheries, school quiz, live performances and boat rides. The festival is organised by the Germany Development Agency – GIZ and other partners.
