The Rwenzori Integrated Wildlife Management (RIWM) Project Officer, Joseph Kaswera, told of how the organisation, with funding from USAID, has already established a modern fish hatchery at Kisinga sub-county headquarters in Bukonzo County.
Kaswera revealed that the organisation, in conjunction with Ugachick in Kampala, is providing quality feeds to help the fish mature easily.
“Formerly fish farmers used to feed their fish on banana, yam and cassava leaves which lack proteins,” said Kaswera.
He added that the fish industry in Uganda and Kasese in particular, has been facing three challenges: lack of fish seed, lack of quality fish feed, and lack of technical support for fish farmers.
Kaswera noted that this was having a negative impact on the Bakonzo community whose main diet comprises fish and cassava flour. He said the organisation has supplied over 40,000 young fish to 14 farmer groups with 340 members and 16 fish ponds in eight sub-counties in the district.
